I'm creating a thread for this so we can share news, official updates & discuss. As you all know now, the novel Coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak has been unfolding and getting more serious over the past few weeks. The number of infected & deaths worldwide keeps rising, in some countries more rapidly than others. Obviously, there's lots of official and unofficial information on the internet with various credibility and opinions; take it for what it's worth, and decide for yourself. Don't panic, but don't be over ignorant either; it can turn to worse, and we should follow basic precautions and stay vigilant. It's now about whether you get sick (most of us are too young to get affected), but about avoiding being a carrier and getting the older and immuno-compromised people infected. I'm going to link to World Health Organization website and recommendations in this first post: WHO: Coronavirus COVID-19 sectionWHO: Protect Yourself

Thanks Urik
These rules in the blue graphic should always be followed, regardless of whether you have a cold, during a influenza/noro virus season or other infections and germs like MRSA/MRGN. And I know a lot of people and I see a lot who don't take hygiene so seriously. I find it disgusting if you are not even able to wash your hands after using the toilet/shopping/being puplic etc. Why pay attention to these rules them now, if they have not done it before?
I'm working in healthcare as an patient driving service, like a ambulance driver without emergencies, so I have experience with something like that. Thats my job, I do this all day. I wish influenza/noro virus etc would get the same, if not more attention. This infects far more people and significantly more people die from it, EVERY YEAR.
I don't want to say that you don't have to take Corona seriously, but you shouldn't forget about other infections in the current situation. You don't hear anything from them anymore. Humanity is knitted in such a way that it is only ever interested in the new. That's dangerous!
So keep safe, be careful and use your common sense.

Thanks for your insight . I realize that by numbers alone influenza and diseases in poor countries kill more people, and I'm not much of an alarmist / panicky person myself, but at this point, I find it hard to just compare it to influenza like 1-2 weeks ago. At least looking at updates, official reported case / deaths ratio, and the developments in quarantine measures being taken by countries. And it's happening amid attempts to contain it. In Italy especially, situation seems dire. Maybe it depends on country, people's behavior / hygiene or infrastructure. Can influenza cause lung complications and deaths this easily? I'll agree that people, officials and governments / bureaucracy play a part of making it worse. Some people still refuse to follow safety guidelines or dismiss the seriousness of it. Some others go crazy and clear out stores. My concern is still about older people, and that it doesn't seem there's any effective treatment for them.

heyho, here are my 5 cent about the corona crisis. I am working as a nurse in a retirement home. Some of our residents are "normal" old people, but the majority are younger people suffering from drug and alcohol disease. Some lived on the street before. In our home it is complicated for the people to behave compliant because of their special situations. We do everything we can to protect our people and ourselfes with the means we have, which are still not the means we would need. Desinfection and respiration protection are low, we could not buy anything last week. An associate is sewing breathing masks for days now and everybody is nervous and concerned. We all dont want to infect our families, as workers in health system. So please do everything you can to reduce the infections like the authorities suggest.
greetings!

grandpa4711 interesting. Are masks for your co-workers, or patiens, or everyone? So far I've predominantly heard the opinion that regular non-sick people don't need it, and to leave it for medics / social workers / etc, but of course, many people still want to buy them, and others speculate re-selling them. I've seen video proof of a man picking used masks from trash to supposedly resell them... It certainly shows how not easy it's to organize people all over the world, even in the face of danger and "common enemy" people don't unite easily. Everyone got their own opinion and attitude; some are ignorant and some go crazy clearing out supermarkets. And for the rest in the middle, it's still not easy because I think the herd mentality and habits are strong. I think a lot of people dismiss it like, well, they either will get it or not. I don't think anyone around me has changed their ways yet. We still go to grocery store at least each other day. I try to be conscious and not touch face when outside / wash or sanitize hands when entering car or coming home, but there's still the surface transmission (groceries, products, packaging, surfaces in store, etc), and they say it can survive up to 72 hours on those. I understand the risk is much lower than with person to person contact, but still, makes me think, if it really spreads, it's almost impossible to completely avoid potential contact with the virus if going outside / public places. And the worst part is you can be a carrier and not know about it. As you know, many countries are (somewhat simultaneously) announcing a "stay home" policy for about 3 weeks. UK announced yesterday, I think some EU countries doing the same... Along with closure of many public places / businesses. In Russia (Moscow and most regions), they announced it only for people over 65 and those with certain chronic illnesses, not everyone. Until April 14th, for now. They want them to stay home, only visit pharmacy and food stores in strong need. They promised them a 35€ bonus payout for that, which is laughably low, but hey it's Russia. I'd be great if these measures have an effect. But with the rate it's progressing, it doesn't look yet that it could end this easily... (I mean rate of spread in EU/US, it's not that bad in Russia yet but it can get worse, and maybe there's just under-testing / under reporting). I follow a few groups on Telegram, which is where I mostly get info from. I try to be rational about it, and try to follow official sources too to compare. Where do you get news from? I thought of posting more stuff here, but then I think there's already plenty of that out there to not spam this forum with it! p.s. this is a lot of words, just all the thoughts I wanted to share... kinda messy, I know!

I know, I didn't add much to this thread as there's enough of that on out there social networks / etc. I think we're getting more used to current situation, hopefully, it resolves towards May / summer. We got isolation mode / business closure for the rest of April in Russia, which will further affect economy though; maybe if it gets better they change their mind and lift the restrictions sooner. Anyways, what I realized in past 1-2 weeks is that there's plenty of people who are idiots (including officials) and won't follow an official pledge / advice voluntarily, even if it jeopardizes population's well being / health. It's unfortunate, but inevitable truth that in such cases only administrative-enforced restrictions have an effect.

For any of you who might need to argue with people about PCR tests or some stuff they read online.

I do a PCR test like this every working day. And I am in the fortunate position of having received the second vaccination with the Biontech Pfizer vaccine 5 days ago. The reaction to the second vaccination was stronger than my reaction to the first vaccination: weakness, tiredness, chills, headache and aching limbs. It is really a good thing that we nurses are vaccinated first, and I thank everyone for their patience until it's their turn to vaccinate. The same applies to all of us: reduce contacts, keep your distance, wear a mask, wash your hands.

Just my personal thougt:
The COVID-19 pandemic is not only terrible, but also has its good sides. Depending on your personal opinion, of course. Due to the lockdown, there was no more rush hour on the streets because a large part was in the home office and the shops were closed and the leisure opportunities were drastically reduced etc.
Driving or walking on the streets was suddenly fun again because it felt like only 25% of the citizens were outside. It was fast and relaxed, no horns, no jostling, no stress. It reminded me of the time shortly after I got my driver's license, back in 2001. Wow 20 years ago.
During my job, I'm 75% of the day on the streets, driving from A to B. So you can say that I spend a lot of time on the streets in the car. At the moment, my city has a incidence value around 35-40, which is on of the best values in this region. And of course, yesterday, due to the good values, there was further lockdown easing. More people are back at work in the office and the best idea was to open the shops etc.
And of course... Because the citizens of other regions can't go shopping in their own county, they are now bringing their money and viruses to us, so that they can finally go shopping again. Aaaaand the Rush Hour is back again. The first 2 days were like shopping days just before christmas. Everyone is crazy. It should be not allowed to change the counties or driving over 25km, just for shopping or make a happy day. Thats not the idea behind a lockdown.
The human being is and will simply be stupid and ignorant.
